For all you flooring experts, you will probably know what most of the products on the market are and what they do. But those of you new to the world of flooring, we've decided to put together some articles for you explaining what these products are and do. Let's start off this series by talking about the ever popular Karndean flooring products.

History

Karndean started life out as a family business in 1973. Today, they are a leading manufacturer of luxury vinyl tiles (sometimes called LVTs) and are still family-owned, which is cool!

What is it?

Luxury vinyl tiles are, as the name suggests, tiles made from vinyl. They are very good at replicating real wood, stone and ceramic flooring. However, they are more attractive because they are often cheaper and easier to maintain.

What are they made from?

Karndean's luxury vinyl tiles are made from calcium carbonate, (commonly called limestone), polyvinyl (a synthetic plastic polymer) and pigments (used for colouring the tiles).

LVT Structure

Karndean's luxury vinyl tiles are extremely well-made, here's an insight into what goes into the making of these products. Each tile is composed of five layers; First, you have two backing layers of PVC for strength. Next, you have one high definition photo layer to mimic the wood, stone or ceramic design. Then you have one clear PVC embossed layer to create realistic 3D texture underfoot. Finally, you cap off the product with a layer of polyurethane as a protective coating. Advantantages of Karndean

Advantages of Karndean's Luxury Vinyl Tiles:

They look almost as good as the real thing.
These tiles are waterproof, so great for kitchens and bathrooms.
LVT is light and strong, so it's suitable for just about any room and for any purpose.
Easy to maintain, so no sanding and polishing required.

Disadvantages of Karndean

Disadvantages of Karndean's Luxury Vinyl Tiles:

It's obviously not the same as real wood, stone or ceramic.
There are cheaper non-real wood alternatives out there, for example laminate flooring.
You will need a professional floor fitter to lay the LVT for you.
Some people have voiced concerns about the environment impact of luxury vinyl tiles, but we'll let you do your own research on that one.
